In 1869 the fashion designer Madeleine Laferrière opened what was to become a highly esteemed maison on rue Taitbout in Paris. By the end of the century, it had developed into an eminent fashion house on a par with the likes of Doucet and Paquin. Maison Laferrière’s international clientèle included aristocrats and royalty. Among her regular customers were Queen Maud of Norway and Alexandra of Denmark.
