Self-portrait, Henk Hartog, 1941
Hartog was trained as a graphic artist and draughtsman in The Hague and London. In 1938 he left for the United States, but in spite of his Jewish origins and the political tensions in Europe, he returned to the Netherlands a year later. In 1942, facing persecution from the Nazi regime, he fled by train to Switzerland, but was arrested during this journey and put on a transport to Auschwitz.
