The Capture of Carthage, Barbara van den Broeck, after Chrispijn van den Broeck, c. 1585
These two prints are each other’s counterparts. They depict scenes from the life of the Roman general Scipio. Although Barbara van den Broeck’s signature is absent from this engraving, the thematic and stylistic connection between the two works clearly confirms that she was responsible for their execution. A later publisher thus mistakenly added the name of another printmaker: Crispijn van de Passe.
