Still Life with a Calabash, Year of the Horse, Yashima Gakutei, 1822

nishikie, with metallic pigments and blindprinting, h 211mm × w 186mm More details

Even though no horse is depicted in this print, it was made for the Year of the Horse. The horse is indicated by the calabash, which refers to the immortal Chokaro, who always carried a gourd with a horse inside. The turtle on the sake dish is a symbol of prosperity and long life. It exhales the word kotobuki, a prosperity wish for a long life.
