In 1712, Emperor Kangxi published Thirty-Six Views of the Summer Palace in Chengde. The book featured his poems and prose, vividly describing the 36 scenic vistas of the Summer Palace. It included woodcut illustrations made by Zhu Gui and Mei Yufeng based on the paintings of the court artist Shen Yu. Ripa used these woodcuts as models for his copperplate engravings.
