Christ at Emmaus, Rembrandt van Rijn, 1654
Three days after Christ had risen from the dead, two of his disciples encountered him on the road to Emmaus. They only became aware of their travelling companion’s true identity while sharing a meal together later that day. This is the moment Rembrandt depicted here. For the beholder, too, it is clear that the figure seated beneath a kind of baldachin and emanating a heavenly light can only be Christ.
