Christ is carried to his tomb in a rocky cave on a bier that sags slightly under his weight. Rembrandt had an eye for this kind of detail. Originally, two women stood at the far left, but they ultimately disappeared under the dense lines indicating the entrance to the tomb. The young bearer in the left foreground was once identified as Rembrandt’s son Titus, but in 1645 he was only four years old.
