The Shepherd and his Family, Rembrandt van Rijn, 1644

etching, h 95mm × w 67mm More details

In a hilly landscape, a shepherd hands his wife a jug while she nurses their child. The sheep drink from a brook on which they have descended. This scene recalls the biblical theme of Joseph and Mary resting on the flight into Egypt. The scratches at the top suggest that Rembrandt reused the plate, something he did quite often.
