Christ Crucified between the Two Thieves, Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1641
Rembrandt depicted Christ on the Cross at different moments throughout his career. In the upper etching, the earliest of these two, he omitted the thieves who were crucified along with Christ. The Saviour looks at his mother, who returns his gaze and collapses. In the later print, Rembrandt did include the thieves, one of whom turns his attention to Christ.
