Untitled (Kopf) (Head), Alexei Jawlensky, 1922
In 1896 Alexei Jawlensky left Russia and went to Munich. With his Expressionist paintings he found kinship with artists who were working in much the same style, such as Kandinsky and Franz Marc. World War I forced him to live temporarily in Switzerland, where he developed a more subdued, spiritual art. From then on, he limited himself to painting scenes of his garden and serene, stylized portraits.
