Explanatory note

De jonge vrouw had het huis verlaten toen zij een klein meisje was, ging in de leer in Cadiz en daarna naar Madrid waar zij "de loterij had gewonnen". In het Prado komt zij een bedelende oude vrouw tegen. Dit blijkt haar moeder te zijn.
