Statues of Chinese Deities, Bernard Picart (workshop of), 1726
In this print, Picart depicts Chinese deities and ceremonies in a decorative, theatrical style, reminiscent of the European Baroque. The top image features a chubby Laughing Buddha known as Maitreya (Milefo). At the bottom, we see the Chinese sea goddess Mazu. Both idols are seated on elevated thrones and surrounded by guardians resembling demons. Kneeling devotees worship them with burning incense.
