Music-Making Company, Wallerant Vaillant, after Gerard Pietersz. van Zijl, 1658 - 1677
This lively scene gives an idea of how music was played in a group setting indoors. It was a popular form of entertainment and a social occasion. Music books with printed scores – as seen here – were made primarily for amateur groups. They contained music that could be performed in varying constellations depending on the number of participants and the instruments available.
