Double Portrait of Betje Wolff and Agatha Deken, Antoine Alexandre Joseph Cardon, after W. Neering, c. 1778 - c. 1800
For the fans! Followers of the writing duo will have bought this print. You see two very different characters. Wolff was considered charming and high-spirited, Deken thoughtful and modest. Wolff grew up in a well-to-do milieu in Vlissingen, Deken in an Amsterdam orphanage. They complement each other. As their friend Jacobus Bellamy said: ‘Bekker (Wolff) is the vinegar, Deken the oil. Together they make a good sauce.’ This print served as the model for the engravings on both glasses.
