Elephant and Rhinoceros, Pieter van den Berge, 1686 - 1696
A live rhinoceros is first brought ashore in London in 1684. A print depicting a rhino fighting an elephant appears in England, which Pieter van den Berge then republishes in the Netherlands. While the explanatory text states that it is a natural representation of the rhino that arrived in London, the artist actually relies on Dürer’s representation.
