Narcissus, Johannes of Lucas van Doetechum, after Gerard van Groeningen, 1601 - 1652
The brothers Joannes and Lucas van Doetecum selected twelve stories from the Metamorphoses. Their liking for architecture and perspective is apparent in all these prints. In a setting brimming with classical architecture, Narcissus stands bent over the water feature. The series of this print originated around 1572 and enjoyed such popularity that it was reissued twice more up to 1655.
