Figures in North African Attire Seated around a Table, Jan Cornelisz Vermeyen, 1513 - 1559
At the Conquest of Tunis in 1535 Emperor Charles V recaptured the city from the Turks. Vermeyen travelled with the troops and made sketches, which he worked out in prints upon his return. This scene is thought to represent Sultan Muley Hassan, who fought on the side of Charles v, and his entourage. Vermeyen’s interest in expressive gestures and powerful contrasts of light and dark is clearly visible in this print.
