Hearing, Willem Peeters (possibly), after Cornelis de Wael, 1628 - 1689
In the 17th century, it was primarily men who played music in public places such as academies, salons, and churches. Amateur players sought to improve their musical skills by attending collegia musica (musical societies). Professional musicians frequently performed at inns or dance chambers, providing entertainment for the occasional guests. The latter would participate in these musical gatherings by singing or playing instruments.
