Gnarled Trees near the Water, Roelant Savery, 1605 - 1639

etching, h 124mm × w 145mm More details

This small print featuring trees with a bridge and hunters in the background is the only etching that can be firmly attributed to Savery. The artist used his own drawing as a model for it. The drawing is squared for transfer – a technique used to copy a composition to a larger scale – indicating that he originally had other plans for it. He ultimately decided to use it for an etching of roughly the same size.
