Explanatory note

Uit een latere analyse blijkt dat Alexander Gardner de voorstelling van de gevallen scherpschutter heeft geënsceneerd om een dramatisch effect te bereiken. Hij verplaatste het lichaam van de soldaat zodat zijn hoofd richting de camera gedraaid was. Ook zette hij het geweer in verticale positie om de doodsoorzaak van de soldaat te benadrukken.
