Study of a Leaf, Robert Burrows (attributed to), 1851 - 1861
Various photographers were painters before they picked up a camera. Sometimes their work in each medium exhibits clear differences: for instance, Burrows’ paintings feature mostly English landscapes, while his photographs zoom in on small details, such as leaves and plants. Whether the photographs served as study material is not known: in general, 19th-century artists revealed very little about their possible use of photographs.
