Portrait of Reverend James Scott, Hill & Adamson (attributed to), 1843 - 1847
In 1843 the painter Hill began working on a group portrait of 450 clergymen. To spare himself time and effort, Hill called on the photographer Adamson to take portraits for use as preparatory studies. Hill was so captivated by the new medium that together with Adamson he began photographing other subjects as well. Nowadays, Hill is far better known for his photographs than his paintings.
