Polaroid Portrait Series No. 19, Karel Appel, 1988
Holding his head in his hands, this man leans forward, surrounded by darkness. A creative talent often produces surprising work in the later stages of their career, and so it is here. Long after his Cobra drawings, Karel Appel made life-size nudes, sculptures in wood, metal and rope, and (photo) collages. During this period he also turned to Polaroid photography with a large-format camera.
