Portrait of Karel Appel., Ed van der Elsken, 1961
Karel Appel and Ed van der Elsken are playing a game with each other here. In one picture the photographer scratched tears and the text, ‘Well, the photographer sometimes wants to try out something [new]/ always [doing] the same is no good/ and not so much an experiment for its own sake’; on the other print, Appel wrote and drew in the area of the empty canvas – as though he had done that there in real life.
