During their journey around the world Ed and Gerda came into contact with cultures previously unknown to them. Even in ‘civilized’ America they encountered ‘true unspoiled primitives,’ as Ed wrote. In the Mojave Desert they camped with Call and Ruby Black, who lived amidst their own works of art in a brightly coloured miniature museum. ‘Look at them standing there, hand in hand – they love each other very much.’
