‘Africa today’, Ed van der Elsken, 1959
Van der Elsken visited the west coast of Africa just when several countries gained independence from their European rulers. He was interested in that transitional moment, in the history and independent future of the countries. While he had an eye for hopes and expectations, in the text to this photograph of an African operating a machine, he also commented on the man’s unfamiliarity with it. See the quote on the wall.
