Van der Elsken regularly combined photographs he had taken at different times and in different places. By arranging them next to each other, he was able to suggest a deeper meaning. In the book, this photograph was set between two pictures of lions symbolizing capitalism and communism. After all, Hong Kong was then a small, capitalist British colony on the Chinese coast. ‘And in between, a little girl: a child of the people crushed between two world powers!’
