Untitled #2, Ruud van Empel, 2004
Before becoming a photographer, Van Empel was a set designer for television. A similar staging strategy underlies his photography projects. He cuts various fragments from many photographs, which he then assembles digitally into a completely new image. Photography is a form of photoshopping: with the images from the visible world, the photographer creates his own, almost surreal, ‘painted’ reality.
