The Corpse of Arthur Leroy, anonymous, 1902
gelatin silver print, h 229mm × w 169mm More details
At the end of the 19th century photography came to be used increasingly at crime scenes. It provided evidence in court and documentation in police files. A French police photographer was probably at work here. Arthur Leroy, a 53-year-old gardener from Raincy (just outside of Paris), was murdered by his former neighbour and the latter’s girlfriend. The loot amounted to 200 French francs.
