Portrait of Henriëtte, Hendrik Hermanus Roelse, 1857
Roelse practiced the curious occupation of daguerreotypist in Middelburg, in the Province of Zeeland. He did so in the (scanty) hours of daylight in the Netherlands. Ten-year-old Henriëtte smiles faintly at the man behind the camera. Later her earrings were coloured in with gold paint and the studio’s tablecloth prop with blue paint.
