As a child Viviane Sassen lived for a few years in Africa, which is where she primarily found her subjects as a young photographer. Sassen visited Suriname for the first time in 2012. In the remote village of Pikin Slee she was struck by the mixture of a traditional way of life and objects symbolizing modernity, such as a cell phone and plastic utensils.
