Calais, France, Henk Wildschut, 2009
The toothbrush is carefully stowed in the roof, the clothes are hung up, and the bed is made. Refugees have turned this shelter into a home. In search of a better life they are trying to enter England via Calais. But this attempt can come to end at any moment: they will be forced to travel farther, or be detained. Their colourful makeshift dwellings are not featured in interior decorating magazines or newspapers. Wildschut photographed something that tends to remain unnoticed.
