In his project ‘Sahel’ Diepraam wanted to record life – or rather the instinct for survival – in Africa in an honest, unvarnished manner. He was not interested in taking standard dismal photographs of this continent ravaged by famine and war. Instead, he photographed man and his protective family living in squalor and in the most primitive circumstances in a dignified manner.
