Tour of the Netherlands, Rico and the Hired Automobile, Jacques-Henri Lartigue, 1912
A cold Dutch winter and mist. Lartigue took this photograph somewhere in the neighbourhood of Delft and The Hague. While a mill, a sailing boat, and a waterway are in evidence, they serve only as a suitable background in this quick snapshot for his album. The real subject is his friend Rico posing with the hired car. Many of Lartigue’s photographs have been reprinted since the 1960s, when Lartigue – by then an old man – was discovered. Prints he made in his younger years are very rare.
