Portrait of a Man from Venezuela, Hendrik ter Keurs, 1936 - 1937
The oil ‘explorer’ Ter Keurs undertook a long expedition for the Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij (Batavian Oil Company), a subsidiary of Shell, from Curacao to Venezuela. He had his brother at home track his whereabouts on a map, and en route photographed the team, daily operations, and local population. Back home, he printed his 379 photographs, mounted them on cardboard and hold them in a self-tiled wooden chest.
