In 1859 the Dutch crown prince William of Orange visited Disdéri’s famous photography studio in Paris. The latter had devised the idea of selling small visitingcard format pictures of famous people. He had a camera specially built with which he could capture eight poses on a single negative, in William’s case he took two shots. Dealers and private individuals could order photographs from the contact sheets.
