View of Rome from Monte Pincio, Robert Macpherson, c. 1860 - before 1863
Robert Macpherson (1814-1872) albumen print, in or before 1863 This classical image leads the viewer past the basin, and via the bench through the frame of leafy boughs to the city in the distance. Rising there is the dome of Saint Peter’s Basilica, the seat of the Apostle Peter. Subtly placed at the left are two watering cans, and the profile of the sky and trees is repeated in the reflecting pool. Like printmakers before them, now photographers registered the beauty of the Eternal City.
