collotype, h 81mm × w 123mm More details

In 1883 a Colonial Exhibition was organized on Museumplein in Amsterdam. From behind a fence visitors could peer at these Surinamese women. The expressions on their faces convey many emotions. The women may no longer have lived in slavery, but had become objects in an exhibition. Although slavery had been abolished by law, many underlying structures remained.
