Lacquer panel depicting Deshima Island, anonymous, c. 1800 - c. 1820
Deshima, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) trading post in Japan, appears here on a lacquer panel. The scene is meticulously inlaid with thin strips of motherof-pearl. It shows the details of the buildings, even the VOC monogram on the flag. In the 19th century, lacquer with mother-of-pearl inlay was a popular Japanese product.
