According to the poem inscribed on this tower, during the negotiations of Den Bosch’s surrender, Pieter Jansen of Vlissingen (Flushing) raised an orange flag on the Den Bosch cathedral’s spire. As a reward he is given a sum of money and this spice container, commissioned by the proud city of Vlissingen (Flushing). The lines of verse praise Frederick Henry as the ‘conqueror’ of Den Bosch, which is why his armorial bearings adorn the tower.
