Rigged wooden frame model of a longboat with sails, mounted on a stand.
Carvel-built, double-banked launch with a round bottom, an almost flat sheer, and a square stern (flat with a skeg). The model has a small foredeck, nine thwarts with eight stretchers and an open cockpit with side-benches. Amidships there is a winch, underneath which there is a square casing with a hole through the bottom: this installation was used to lift heavy anchors. The stem is coppered and has a sheave. The frames are made of three parts. It has a basic rudder with a tiller fitting over the rudder head. The rigging consists of a main dipping lugsail and a spritsail mizzen with a jigger bumpkin. The slide for the carronade, that runs along the entire length of the boat, is made out of two parts. The carronade is also moved by means of the windlass amidships, which, together with the fish davit that can be fitted in the floor of the cockpit, also serves to lift anchors. Additional accessories include a gangway, a hand pump, two boat hooks, twenty oars and loading equipment for the carronade.
The model represents a longboat according to the regulations of the Dutch Navy of 1828.1 Obreen mentions that the installation for lifting heavy anchors with the hole in the bottom had been used in the Netherlands for a long time, but that in the United Kingdom the practice only came into use around 1858.2
Scale (on model) 1:20.
