Construction model of a heating furnace, consisting of a furnace building and a chimney. The model is painted white all over and is incomplete. A structure of laths around the building represents strengthening irons. The model can be taken apart in two halves to examine the internal corridor system. To one side there is the furnace with a grating and a small door; the opening at the other side is much larger, destined for the metal objects that need to be heated. Furnace and oven are only separated by a difference in level: the heated air and smoke go from the furnace directly into the oven, then through two downward-slanting passageways at the sides back to a passageway underneath the heating room, and from there to the chimney.
This heating furnace to harden metal objects was installed on the former Navy dockyard in Rotterdam,1 which was closed down in 1850.
