Wooden model of a dredger of the so-called scoop or bag-and-spoon type.
The bag and spoon are operated by means of a winch, the tackle running over a pulley of a bipod gin. The cathead situated between the legs of the gin probably serves as a leverage point. The capstan on the foredeck was used for the anchor and the propulsion of the raft. The raft has rings in the deck along the long sides and three bollards along each short side.
A model of a mud barge, mentioned in Obreen’s catalogue as belonging to this model,1 is missing. The addition of the winch to this type of dredger was patented by Dutch engineer Simon Stevin (1548-1620) in 1589. This type was in use as late as 1830, among other places in the harbour of Hellevoetsluis.2
