Construction model of a double capstan in a wooden frame representing two decks of a ship.
The upper barrel is for eight bars with four wooden ‘Brown’ whelps, the lower barrel is for twelve bars with five metal sheathed ‘Brown’ whelps. Both have four pawls in the heel, to prevent them from turning back. The square metal spindle of the lower barrel is extended into the hollow wooden spindle of the upper barrel. In order to achieve one large capstan, the two spindles can be connected with two iron pegs through the upper barrel. With the pegs removed the two barrels can be operated as separate capstans.1
Scale (on model) 1:10.
