Fragment of a ship flag, lower left-hand corner, bearing a red cross (St George’s cross) on a white background, with a double border of red and white checks.
This is a ‘Guinea Jack’ of the Royal Africa Company. It is thought to have been captured by Lieutenant Admiral Michiel Adriaensz de Ruyter (1607-1676) off the coast of West Africa in 1665.
