Silver cup in the form of a shallow dish on a stem, which consists of an anchor with a chain and a fantastical fish squirting water, twisted around the shank. The underside of the dish is ornamented with a Jacob’s shell (coquille) and a cross (the military decoration ‘Metalen Kruis’, i.e. metal cross) surrounded by an oak twig and a twig with oranges. The edges of the foot are ornamented with a cable and a belt and buckle, on which the inscription is engraved. The case and document mentioned in the inventory are missing.
The society ‘Het Metalen Kruis’ was founded in memory of the Dutch-Belgian War of 1830-32.3 The Metalen Kruis was a medal awarded to soldiers that served in this war. The cup was offered by the Society to the screw steamer bearing the same name, which came into service in 1863. The cup was added to the Navy Model Room on 22 November 1880 after the screw steamer Het Metalen Kruis had been sold out of service while in India.4
