Model of part of a floating dry dock.
The model shows part of one half of the dock. It is made entirely of brass, the construction consisting of angle iron frames with diagonal trussing and reinforced with bulkheads. Bulkheads divide the bottom into flooding compartments. The side compartments, which become wider at the base, remain dry and contribute to the stability. The model has a steam engine with a Cornish boiler with Galloway pipes on the upper deck underneath the awning that drives two centrifugal pumps below, which empty out the flooding compartments. Horizontal trusses operated by means of winches on deck served to get the ship in the right position, which was then supported by hinged trusses and blocks.
The model was shown at the Exhibition Universelle of 1878 in Paris. The iron dry dock represented by this model was made by order of the Dutch government by the Koninklijke Fabriek van Stoom en Andere Werktuigen of J. van der Made in Amsterdam in 1876. It was 100 metres long and had a carrying capacity of 4,800 tons. It was taken apart and shipped to Surabaya in 1879, where it was assembled again and towed to the island of Onrust to assist the old dry dock (NG-MC-1187).
Scale (on model) 1:20.
