Rotating tide table (volvelle), indicating the tidal streams of the west coast of the Netherlands.
The outer fixed circle indicates the time. The inner turning circle or indicator is divided into twelve sections for the hours, and four concentric circles for the coastal stretches of (respectively) Holland, Goeree and Maas, Brouwershaven and Walcheren. The tidal streams are obtained by first calculating high tide at Texel, then pointing the arrow of the indicator to the obtained time, after which the directions of the tidal streams and the high and low tides for the other places can be read.
