Description

Gepantserde kanonneerboot op een rivier, gedeeltelijk onscherp. Het schip heeft geschutpoorten in de zijden, een toren voor scherpschutters, twee schoorstenen, dekhuizen. Manschappen zijn te zien aan dek. Schip ontworpen door James Buchanan Eads. Handgeschreven opschriften onder foto.

Explanatory note

Het City-klasse pantserschip Baron de Kalb maakte van 1861 tot 1863, toen het door een mijn (torpedo) tot zinken werd gebracht in de Yazoo-rivier, deel uit van het Western Gunboat Flotilla. Het schip heette aanvankelijk de St. Louis, maar kreeg in 1862 de naam Baron de Kalb. De naam is een verwijzing naar de Beiers-Franse baron Johann von Robais (1721-1780), geboren Kalb, die als majoor-generaal diende in de Continental Army ten tijde van de Amerikaanse Onafhankelijkheidsoorlog (1775-1783).
