Model of the upper part of a rudder, showing one pintle. The cap fitting over the top of the blade has a hexagonal hole for the shaft of the rudder and two holes for the pendant.
This model was made for the rudder of the 6-gun screw steamer Watergeus, 56 metres long, built in Amsterdam from 1863 to 1864. Caps of this kind were common in the United Kingdom, but when applied to Watergeus caused considerable vibration at low speeds. The rudder had to be replaced by a smaller one.
